Nursing organizations help to expand the knowledge of nurses to provide our patients with the best healthcare. Whether you’re on the medical surgical floor, emergency department, intensive critical unit, or psychiatric unit; nurses have the ability to make an impact in every setting imaginable. Organizations that offer diversity training which seek to improve the performance of the organizational culture tend to retain their employees and have overall more engagement into their practice (Helbig, 2022). Health equity is access to health care regardless of someone’s social background, or economic status (Helbig, 2022). A healthcare organizations goal is to eliminate health disparities through education and providing real-time training.
The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) is an organization I would like to focus on due to my current practice of working the medical surgical floor/telemetry. The AMSN is committed to delivering diversity, equity, and inclusion for all of their nurses (AMSN, n.d.). The AMSN discusses the nursing shortage is critically important to address for the delivery of high-quality health care (AMSN, n.d.). It’s important for nurses in our field to help identify social determinants of health because it can impact the health and health care cost for our institutions. Patients from the hospitals around the country are facing barriers that interfere with their health. Whether its addiction, poor health habits, low-income housing, or abuse at home; nursing has to identify barriers that impede the healing process for patients.
